Is Homosexuality adapted through genetics or choice?

The Topic of homosexuality and same-sex relations has been a huge topic in today’s society. After sifting through the various amounts of opinions that an individual may have on the topic, one thing stands true. This is a suppressed group. Although in recent years many advances have been made in the fight for gay rights, much more understanding and acceptance still need to take place. Whatever you may believe in one major question has been brought up regarding homosexuality. “How does it happen”? Among many possible explanations that have matriculated, two possible answers have been at the forefront of this argument. These two main theories are genetics and choice. These two opinions are very different yet plausible solutions that are highly debated.

Case for Genetic Theory:

Individuals who support the genetics theory state that studies have recovered evidence identifying a stretch on the X Chromosome, which they call Xq28, the “Gay Gene”. While not all molecular biologists seem to confirm the notion, most do agree that while studying both fraternal and identical twins evidence suggests that there is some heritable compounds linkage related to homosexuality. A study was administrated on over 800 gay individuals, to reveal that similar patterns were located on both the X chromosome and something that scientists call chromosome 8. This test boasted the largest sample size of any similar test ever previously performed. The experiment was able to theorize that any single nucleotide polymorphisms found in any number of test subjects, would have some sort of linkage to sexual orientation. In other words, the only similarity in any one of the subject genes was that they were in fact gay.

Choice Theory:

People who believe in this theory state the obvious facts that no conclusive proof has been found that homosexuality is in fact found in genetics. Also, people state that most young children do not associate themselves with any sexual orientation, until later when they go through puberty. It’s during this time period when people have the choice to choose that they are attracted to. You followed the impulse that your body presented and ultimately made a choice. Studies were done in the 1940s and the 1970s including 1700 homosexual individuals. While interviewing these individuals most exclaimed that their sexual preferences were influenced by environmental and social experiences. Some even stated that older homosexuals approached them to sway them on their orientations. A recent study has been done that 88% percent of lesbian women and 73% of homosexual men have experienced sexual arousal from the opposite sex. While an astounding 85% of homosexual and lesbian individuals have admitted to being in love with a member of the opposite sex. Many homosexuals have also admitted that they once in fact considered themselves heterosexual, while 2% of Heterosexuals have admitted sexual relations with someone of the same sex. Belief in The choice theory turns to heavy encounters with same-sex individuals during childhood and environmental influences, associated with feminine activity.

When you truly look at the argument as a whole nobody is right or wrong. In my opinion without concrete evidence supporting each side, you can’t definitively tell. For all we know, none of those theories are correct. Lack of research on the topic has been the adversary of outcomes. Other theories state that it might fall back to factors regarding personality or nurture. Until we have absolute proof on the topic, we know one thing for sure. Homosexuals are humans too. Whether you like it or not, these people deserve a voice, along with acceptance into our society. No matter if they choose their path or not, shunning them for their actions is inhumane and immoral. Many strides have been made in The LGBTQ community in recent years to get their voice heard. However, like many other movements, they’re still a long way to go. What do You Think?

  1. This is such an interesting topic! Personally, I think it can be since birth but in a way I don’t feel like a child can be ‘straight’ or ‘gay’ at that stage- they don’t even know the meaning of it! In the same way as what our favourite fruit is is not determined by genetics, I find it unlikely that what sex we like is either! I just posted about social acceptance too, my blog is https://t0bec0nsidered.wordpress.com/ if you would like to take a look. Great post, I look forward to reading more of them!
